Analysis of factors affecting employment of people with mental disabilities

Abstract
Purpose:The aim of this study is to identify the factors affecting the employment of people with mental disabilities through quantitative data, with the aim of providing baseline data on the employment of people with mental disabilities.

Methods:Using the panel data on the employment of people with disabilities collected by the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Employment Development Institute, chi-squared test, Fisher¡¯s exact test, and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze the factors between people with mental disabilities who are employed and people with mental disabilities who are not employed.

Results:The results of the panel data study showed that only 14.4% (20 people) of the total 138 people with intellectual disabilities were employed. Overall Health condition, able to work at a typical level, region, recipients of the National basic livelihood security system and experience of public employment agency services were found to be significant variables in the employment of people with mental disabilities.

Conclusion:The characteristics of the employment factors of people with mental disabilities derived from this study can serve as a basis for future policies related to activation of employment of people with mental disabilities. It is necessary to improve the medical system and establish an employment system that reflects the health characteristics of people with mental disabilities.
